Cold and raining...

So I'm staying indoors today. Maybe I'll download a movie and watch that. Ahh, Sundays... not much different from Sydney Sundays. And nothing is open in Europe on Sundays so I can't really do a lot.

So, I'm thinking I'm going to start writing some stories for the travel site I have going with Belinda and Lauren C, both who I worked with at Express Publications back in the day, before Lauren and I were made redundant. "My careers over before it even started!" Clearly I've abandoned any attempt to make this blog seem remotely polished. I think I'll just keep it as a rough guide of my travels. I'd rather just write whatever is in my head so my lovely friends and [a select few] family members back home can read and live vicariously through me. Aren't I nice?

So, I'm starting the ball rolling again girls. I expect lots of stories coming through about your own European experiences. I can’t believe you’re not visiting me in Berlin. Not cool. That’s right, I said it!

Last night I went to my friend Huey's place for dinner. He has been in Berlin for about 3 months now, working on some art and visiting his sister, Colette, who lives here. Their apartment is really cool; it's the penthouse of this building and half is used as a studio space for various artists which they rent out, the other half Colette, her friend Richard who is also an artist and the brains behind the video game, The Need for Speed, Jeffrey who I haven't met, plus Miho a friend of Colette who has a wicked story.

So Miho: She is 30 years old (but does not act it at all, at all) and is from Japan, some island in the very north but I forget the name. So she went to medical school to become a psychiatrist or brain surgeon, I couldn't really understand, anyway her parents paid for her schooling. About 1 or 2 years into practicing she decides she doesn't actually like this... so she quits her job, moves to Manhattan and becomes a jazz singer! What the eff? She has since lived in Sydney, London and now lives in Tokyo recording and performing. Very cool. I love stories like this where people realise they are unhappy in their careers and then actually do something about it. Also makes me feel better about changing my career, but then... I didn't study at uni for over 6 years.

The people I have been meeting have been really interesting and very different from anyone I would meet in Sydney.

Anyway, back to Huey's place. He is leaving on Tuesday to head to Hong Kong for 6 days before going back home to Australia. So as a farewell we had dinner, which was really lovely. Then we decided to watch a nature documentary called Earth. It's interesting, but who wants to see a poor elephant getting attacked by a pride of lions? Or an elephant cub getting lost form the herd, finding it's mother's footsteps in the dirt and following them... but in the opposite direction. It's heartbreaking! But Richard has this huge white board that he uses as a screen, a projector and speakers so we set up this mini-cinema outside under the stars. It was really cool; we were all rugged up under blankets and jackets, watching a film about nature on a rooftop in Berlin. Can't say I’ve done that everyday... eventually it got really cold (because it is FREEZING in Berlin at the moment and it's not even winter yet!) so we went inside and watched Milk, and by watching Milk I mean falling asleep a quater of the way through. I've already seen it three times and if you haven't seen it, I suggest you do.

For Heuy's last night he wanted to go out but Berlin doesn't really get going until about 2:30am, if that. So everyone went and had a nap in preparation. As it turned out, only Huey and I woke up so it was just we. Headed to a place called Panorama Bar, which is meant to be pretty wild and the best club in Europe. Gotta say, it is pretty radical. Get in at about 2:30am I think. It is HUGE with lots of light so you can see people really clearly. Later on in the morning, closer to about 5am is when it gets really packed and people start utilising the cubby holes... Imagine secluded, dark cubbyholes, well need I say more? Basically you can do whatever or whoever you want (with their consent of course!) in this bar.

But moving away from Panorama's wilder side and onto the music. Germans do really, really good minimalist techno. The last time I went to a club that had a DJ playing minimalist was at Kink in Sydney a few years ago and it was shite! But the Germans know what they are doing, I'd really like to go back and stay longer, I got home about 6am which is pretty tame but we were tired. There was a huge line outside when we were leaving and that made me feel like even more of a nanna. And we even had a nap beforehand!

Well I have a new roommate as the unfriendly Aussie girl moved out. I can't remember this girl's name, which is terrible but she is from Belgium and has just moved to Berlin. So she is friendless too, and she speaks no German. So maybe I can make her part of my group, my group equalling to one person at the moment, and that person is moi. She seems really nice. I was asking her about European winter, as I'm scared I'm going to freeze to death. She said a good coat is all you need, or several. Done. Will go shopping tomorrow.

So I have to leave this apartment on Tuesday and them I'm back to hostels for 10 days. Sigh. I have managed to get a discount for staying so long at this one place, which has free wifi, a kitchen and lockers. I can do it. I can stick it out. But I'm so used to having my own space! Whatevs. Maybe I'll find some people to hang out with. Then on the 26th I move into an apartment for three weeks. I'm sub-letting from a girl called Stef. She is heading to Croatia with her boyfriend for three weeks and I don't blame her. Wish I was heading somewhere warmer. Her roommate, Signe is really lovely. And the area is safe to walk around that late at night, which is re-assuring. I think it's going to be a lot of fun and the apartment is a lot more homely and cosy than where I am at the moment. Then on the 28th I head down to Munich for Oktoberfest. Can't wait! Meeting up with Nikki and Alex and we're staying together at the hostel. Yay! It will be so nice to see familiar faces. Then I arrive back in Berlin on the 2nd. This guy I’ve met is helping me move on Tuesday night… we’ll see how this pans out. Anyway…

I was meant to start writing a fictional story tonight but I’m clearly procrastinating...

Well I have no photos this time around, as you're not allowed to take your camera into Panorama Bar.

Oh! and I'd like to say congrats to the physie girls for such an awesome job at the two interclubs the last few weeks. Heard it all went swimmingly, I'm sure you were all beautiful! Wish I could have been there. Stolen this pic from Ange's facebook. You all look gorgeous! Can't wait to hear how Senior's weekend pans out, should be in just over a month, now?

Courtney, Lyndal, Kelly, Carly, Ange, Meredith, Lisa and Loretta (last two down the front). Looking great girls! Miss you!
